Some Crazy Shelving for a Bookworm
Before
No real "before" picture for this project - just an empty corner previously filled with an IKEA Billy bookcase.
The concept here was floating shelves - but not the usual ones you can find at the store. We wanted these strong - for kids not to climb on ;-) - and to evoke a feeling of branches, so we went with stained 2"x6" mounted with 1/2" steel rods sunk into studs - you can see a pair sticking out of the wall on the left of this picture.

Build shelves first, mount second
Careful mitre cuts to make sure that the flat parts of the shelving were all level, with strong hidden screw & glue joints. Then, each shelf just slid into 2 or 3 steel posts - no extra gluing or fastening required!

All done...
Four shelves on each wall, tied in at the corner.
A small quarter-circle table at just the right height for tea.
A sturdy 12" deep shelf below for a pet terrarium.
All filled up with books, knick-knacks, and other decoration.

An excellent source of both whimsy and storage
